And once in a blue moon give yourself a heart attack thinking your cars jacked because you grabbed the wrong key? Yup once about every 3 months I go into full panic mode for 30 seconds (you can attempt to start your car about 100 times in 30 seconds when your freaking out)! For reference I have 2 dodge's that use the goofy key/fobs that allow you to turn to the on position and get ac power with the wrong key but just wont turn the car on so that doesn't help your brain realize your mistake. And on a side note I once had a friend accidentally jam his Saturn key into his Mazda and it instantly broke right off and had to be towed away for an expensive repair so guess this is better than that!

Ford family, thankfully I'm the only one with a Mercury key...

Not nearly identical keys: I have two cars from the same company and model year that take the same key. Even w/ keychains, I get them confused at least once a week.

Ah, those GM keys. We have more than a few lying around. We don't have the cars anymore, but the fobs are fun for my daughter to mess with.

Mom's Saturn key and Dad's Chevy key look identical when you're fumbling around in a dark car in the morning. Many times has the Chevy key been put in the Saturn's ignition. And it lets it go in too, can't turn it though.

09 and a 12 here only difference is and its kind of a big one is that the 09 has remote start built into the fob but I can't see that when I'm trying to start it. Wife likes to occasionally park dead center of the 2 lane driveway so that I have to move it over for her or put it in the garage, gets me every time..

AHHHHHHHH miss the old days of duel keys.. Only owned one Chevy but that brings back memories...

The guy who owns the car wash place where I go complained to me last week "All Ferrari keys look the same." I told him I'd help him figure out which was which.

These new fobs let you get full ac power on but when you try to start it just laughs at you..

So it looks just like the ford keys but has an extra bit of plastic stuck to it in some awkward place? I kid I kid

My family has two chryslers that take identical looking keys that are even cut identically.
It hasn't happened, thankfully, but if we tried to use the wrong key three times, ECU locks and the car is a rolling brick that needs to go to the dealer to come back to life. I understand the safety benefits of SKIM, but it's a horrible system.

Geez.. That's crazy. Hadn't heard that before sounds like a nasty setup.

Nope, different key altogether

The "grey" key from Chrysler. Sentry Key ImMobilizer (I think officially called "SKIS").
The car will start, but shut off after 10 seconds. 3 times and it's over. I've seen people get rid of their SKIM locks, and tape the grey key inside the steering column so they can use older keys and not worry about it.
Both the keys and the receivers can go bad, causing all sorts of issues.

Umm that was a joke right? *Mercury board meeting notes*"As you can see we've added dimples to our keys further differentiating our brands so that we wouldn't be confused with our entry level sister company". Not hating owned two fords but those 2 keys sum up the difference between the brands perfectly. Here's what my 92 and 93's were rocking.

Two examples:
I had a Ford Windstar, but one of the keys wasn't programmed. On numerous occasions I grabbed the wrong key and just got a 'Security' warning light on the dash instead of having the car start, forcing me back to the house to get the other keychain. Usually the one with the non-programmed key didn't have a house key, so more fun ensued... When selling that car they wanted to give me less money because it wouldn't start, then I realized it was the key issue and i got my extra $150.
My folks both have W210 E320s. Per instructions from MB, you can't have two electronic keys in close proximity or the car won't start, so they are forced to keep extra keychains for each others cars rather than keeping two keys on the same chain. They're probably better off doing this as it would be easy to confuse the two.

Two cars? Two, whole, separate, running cars? And I'm trying to hold on to my one car here. I'm jelly lol

never owned 2 cars at same time , but best car key i had was for my 1985 VK Commodore. all you needed to unlock it was a 5 cent coin. the ignition barrel was so worn you could turn it by hand without using the key.

Not anymore but when I was growing up we had:
1989 Chevy C1500
1991 Olds Cutlass Ciera
1987 Chevy Cavalier
1985 Chevy Camaro
All of which had identical looking keys.

doesn't that have a real key inside?
![]() 10/28/2014 at 14:28 |

Sure does. Funny fact of you use the key your alarm goes off and can't be turned off without starting the car or hitting panic on the fob that is likely dead or you wouldn't be using the key in the first place.

I figured it was for if your car was dead and you needed to get in to pop the hood for a jump.

Have had to use it both ways. Dead car battery once and dead key fob another time. Wasn't sure if the fob would start the car since it was killed by water used the key alarm went off and van still started even though fob was dead. Guess the chip to the ignition doesn't use the same power source as the buttons.
